Modern Interior Design Trends for 2025

As we approach the end of 2024, interior designers are turning their sights toward the future, considering what will be the next best thing in elegant living.

Thankfully, there are many keys in consumer trends–and those of major interior decorators–that give insight into what we can expect in 2025. Today, we’ll unveil the biggest trends in modern interior design so that you have the trendiest home on the market when you ring in the new year.

Biophilic Design

It’s no secret that lush greenery brings a sense of well-being to any home. Not only do indoor plants improve air quality, but they also offer a restful presence, making even the smallest space feel like a secret garden.

Hanging plants are an excellent way to use windows, creating a quaint and magical air without sacrificing precious horizontal space. A living bath mat stuffed with mosses purifies the air in a bathroom and keeps floors clean by soaking up excess water from a bath.

For areas without natural light, vintage botanical prints pair beautifully with minimalist designs like Japandi or Mid Century Modern.

Biophilic design is also very versatile and can accent any greater theme, such as leveraging native plants that match a given interior design style. For example, a Mediterranean-inspired interior design would perfectly match bonsai olive or citrus plants. Western themes are excellent for succulents, which are also very low-maintenance and do well with bright light.

Cozy Minimalism

After the recent events of previous years, people yearn for both organization and comfort, which has spurred the Japandi movement. This fusion of Scandinavian design and Japanese aesthetics focuses on creating warm, soothing spaces carefully curated for maximum efficiency.

Instead of having dozens of uncomfortable throw pillows cluttering a space, Japandi invites interior designers to place one or two that are meant to be held and touched. A soft blanket draped over a clean-lined couch invites residents to sit and relax, placing their evening tea on a lovingly designed wood table with an attractive grain.

The goal of Japandi is not to remove every extraneous object but to place everything with intention, picking the most necessary and relaxing items. There’s a strong focus on gentle, light colors such as off-white, light blue, tea green, and beige. Natural materials, mainly wood, metal, glass, and fabrics, are preferred over artificial ones.

Indoor/Outdoor Living

The wild success of new projects like the Residences at Mandarin Oriental, Miami, demonstrates the popularity of indoor/outdoor living. This new condominium project in Brickell Key, Miami, will afford its lucky residents with 12-foot-deep private terraces with a summer kitchen, where they can sip cold drinks and grill up sumptuous meals while overlooking the gorgeous Biscayne Bay.

A seamless transition from interior to exterior affords residents greater autonomy and more living space; it also more efficiently uses square footage, which is often at a premium for urban homes.

To create a smooth flow between these two spaces, create an inclusive theme between the areas; this may mean things like choosing paving stones that match the hardwood floor inside and installing exterior versions of interior lighting. Or, as in the above case, using floor to ceiling windows. Another option is to use fabrics designed for the outdoors in the interior or utilize near-matches of the patterns if this isn’t feasible.

Climate plays a role in how interior designers can successfully balance the lovely indoors and the great outdoors. In sunny Miami, where the weather is perfect all year round, interior designers like those of the Residences at Mandarin Oriental, Miami have ample options; northern climes might have a greater challenge. However, this doesn’t mean it’s impossible to offer indoor/outdoor living beyond the Sunshine State; four-season rooms are always a great option.

Office Chic

With remote work still a driving factor in the global economy, interior designers are coming to understand how essential it is that home offices be both practical and fashionable.

Deep concentration, whether for studying or working, is only obtainable with comfortable, ergonomic accessories within easy reach, as well as thoughtful design that maximizes organization while minimizing distraction.

Today’s workers are also very health-conscious, so their remote workspaces should prioritize their overall well-being. Adjustable desks, which can be used sitting or standing, have become highly popular. This also requires some adjustments to the overall interior design, which will allow for an easy transition between the two states.

Soft, diffuse lighting is easier on the eyes for long working sessions; gone are the buzzing fluorescent lightbulbs of years past. Plush chairs, soothing colors, and sophisticated artwork create a professional appearance without sacrificing comfort.

The most important thing for interior designers is creating spaces that are easily customizable for different work needs, whether that is correcting reports by hand, setting up an impromptu studio to record a video, or typing an email.

Hot Colors in 2025

Every year comes with its own trendy colors, and 2025 is gearing up to be an earthy year. Terracotta, sage, ochre, and coconut will all be wildly popular, perfectly matching biophilic or Japandi designs.

Another great option is metallics, especially silver; one of Pantone’s colors for 2025 is “moonbeam,” demonstrating the lunar craze that swept across the nation in 2024.

For those who want something more unique, monotone design is also trending; this is when a room features different shades of the same color in various saturations, such as coral or amber.
